ARoS and Aarhus Light Rail transform trains into moving works of art

As part of ARoS' exhibition Barbara Kruger - No Comment, two of Aarhus Light Rail's trains will be transformed into moving works of art.

From Monday 9 December, Aarhus residents and visitors to the city can look forward to experiencing the exhibition
No Comment and American artist Barbara Kruger's direct messages not only at ARoS, but throughout the city and as part of their everyday lives.

Over the years, Barbara Kruger's works have adorned buildings, billboards, signs and skate parks, just like she has previously dressed school buses and taxis with her works in New York, Los Angeles and Cologne. The transformation of the Aarhus Light Rail trains is thus a natural extension of her eye-catching artistic practice.

“Occupying public space is a central part of Barbara Kruger's practice. That's why I'm incredibly excited to see No Comment move beyond the walls of ARoS and out into the public space, where it engages in dialogue with the entire city of Aarhus,” says Ellen Drude Skeel Langvold, curator at ARoS.

The two light rail trains dressed in Barbara Kruger's works will run on Aarhus Light Rail’s line L2 between Odder and Lisbjergskolen/Lystrup from Monday 9 December 2024.

“Aarhus Light Rail is proud that Barbara Kruger has chosen to use our trains to take over the public space. We have had a close and good collaboration with ARoS from the initial idea originated to the realisation of the project,” says Michael Borre, Director of Aarhus Light Rail.

A critical observer
Barbara Kruger was born in 1945 in Newark, New Jersey. For over 40 years, Kruger’s astute observations of society have reflected, and critically examined, our contemporary condition.

Kruger’s work is characterised by her use of oversized typefaces and commercial and industrial formats. Throughout her career she has incorporated everything from magazine covers, t-shirts, and mugs to bags and skateboards into her artistic practice.

The exhibition No Comment is on view at ARoS until 21 April 2025. The light rail trains dressed in Barbara Kruger's works will run on Aarhus Light Rail's line L2 from 9 December 2024 and throughout the exhibition period.
