ARoS is expanding with a designated space for new commissions.

ARoS is expanding its exhibition facilities by around 20 percent with a brand new subterranean gallery as part of The Next Level museum expansion.

The Salling Foundations, which have generously supported the entire expansion from the groundbreaking ceremony, are contributing with another donation of DKK 4 million to complete the nearly 1,000 square meter gallery.

"We receive the Salling Foundations' contribution with heartfelt gratitude. The Salling Foundations' visionary support for ARoS' development plays a crucial role in shaping the museum into an international beacon," says museum director Rebecca Matthews, adding

"The gallery will serve as a testament to the foundations' ongoing investment in art." With the generous donation, ARoS is able to secure full funding for the completion of the gallery.

“At the Salling Foundations we are delighted to contribute to ARoS‘ visionary, new subterraean gallery, which we believe will be an important platform for international artists, known and new. This new exhibition space will offer world-class art experiences for the benefit of all visitors,” says Karin Salling, Vice Chair of the Købmand Herman Salling Foundation.

A gallery space for contemporary, site-specific commissions
The new gallery will give a platform for contemporary artists to create ambitious new work for the gallery's unique architecture.

The annual exhibitions will be on display for nine months enabling the work to reach wide audiences through the seasons. The gallery space with its’ focus on new commissions is unique in a Danish context.

The subterranean gallery space is designed with an industrial look, free-standing columns, and ceiling-hung, visible technical installations, including advanced sound and absorption technologies.

The gallery is designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects to enable artistic experimentation across a breadth of media, from film and video installations to live performances.

Aarhus Municipality is the developer of the entire museum expansion. The gallery is due to open in 2025 together with the museum expansion.
The first exhibition to transform the gallery space will be announced on November 14, 2024.
