ARoS extends the opening hours for schools

Starting Tuesday, February 18, school classes can visit ARoS before all other visitors.

ARoS is extending the opening hours especially for school classes, who from week 8 can experience the museum from 9 am – an hour before the doors open for other guests and while it is still quiet in the museum galleries.

The new opening hours will apply every weekday from February 18. The museum will be open to five school classes at a time who have booked one of the newly developed educational programs in the museum's permanent collection exhibitions Human Nature and ARoS Samling: 1960 nu. The courses cover the Golden Age, the Modern Breakthrough, modernism, contemporary art for older students and storytelling for younger students.

“Part of ARoS' vision is to increase our reach, making us more accessible. By extending the opening hours for school classes, we will be able to offer more and longer educational programs in our exclusive settings. This way, we can help schools move their teaching out of the classroom and into inspiring and relevant exhibitions with a focus on engagement, learning and debate,” says Rebecca Matthews, Museum Director of ARoS.

From Golden Age paintings to contemporary art
There will be two different educational programs, which can only be booked in the morning. The sessions, which last an hour and a half, are half an hour longer than the sessions later in the day.

"As the courses are half an hour longer than usual, it gives the guides the opportunity to connect strands across art history and societal changes. The students thus gain a better understanding of how the different artistic movements are connected to their time,” says Evrim Citirikkaya, Acting Head of Public Engagement at ARoS, adding

"The course in the collection exhibition Human Nature cuts to the bone of the Golden Age and connects it with Modernism. It will be a walk-through Danish art history, where we reflect trends in each period. The second new course takes place in the exhibition ARoS Samling: 1960 - nu and is a chronological review that looks at artistic trends in recent times from a social perspective.”

After the program, students and teachers are welcome to explore the rest of the museum or enjoy their packed lunch in the school dining area on Level 3 of the museum. Admission to the museum is free for students and teachers after a booked educational program, which costs DKK 750. Schools in Aarhus Municipality can apply for reimbursement via ULF.
