- We’re very pleased that this work has been acquired for our collection. The installation gallery has undergone a transformation in recent years and with Take Over, we’re one step closer to achieving our ambition of remodelling the galley space to give it an immersive character where sound, light, imagination, and memory are activated as we move through each separate space, says Lise Pennington, senior curator, ARoS.

About the artist and the work

Anri Sala (b.1974) was born and grew up during communist rule in Albania. He studied, for instance, at the Albanian Academy of Arts from 1992 until 1996. As an artist, he generally works with video and music, frequently using music as a central element in his works. He now lives in Berlin.

Sala perceives music as being infused with cultural layers of meaning, which changes over time and in specific contexts. He believes that music has a broader, multi-level appeal in terms of emotion and content than words and the roughly eight-minute work Take Over is a perfect example of this.

Here, Sala marks the coupling between the two national hymns La Marseillaise and L’Internationale, questioning, for example, the relationship between society and the individual. The work combines piano and electronic music. A free-standing glass wall divides the gallery space into two and the projections appear on both sides of this.
