ARoS and the LEGO® Group invite children and young at heart to let their dreams run wild

The imaginative universe of Surrealism merges with the world of dreams during the autumn holidays when ARoS, from 14-22 October, in collaboration with LEGO® DREAMZzz™, invites children, young adults, and families to build everything they have ever dreamed of.

The exhibition A Surreal Shock - Masterpieces from Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is the focal point of this year's autumn holiday activities at ARoS, where the museum’s entire Level 3 will be the set for activities inspired by the LEGO® Group's new launch, LEGO® DREAMZzz™, which is based on research on children's ability to dream.

"At ARoS, we prioritise our responsibility towards children, young people and families, and we want to promote creativity and offer our guests life-affirming encounters with art. We look forward to doing so during the autumn holidays, when we invite children and young at heart to dive into the experimental universe of Surrealism and let their dreams manifest in the real world," says Rebecca Matthews, Museum Director at ARoS.

Gulshanoy Tolipova-Gourdin, Head of Nordic Marketing at the LEGO® Group, says:
"In the LEGO® DREAMZzzuniverse, we explore what happens when dreams come true. To collaborate with ARoS and bring Surrealism together with the endless creative possibilities that arise when the museum's young and old visitors get their hands on LEGO bricks is truly unique."

Play, art, and creativity

An enchanting portal with two doors - one adult-sized and one child-sized - will lead visitors into a Surrealist dream universe that encourages them to unleash their imagination and to get carried away by their dreams.

Guests can become co-creators of a huge Surrealist LEGO mosaic with more than 350,000 LEGO elements based on Belgian painter René Magritte's (1898-1967) famous painting La maison de verre from 1939.

In addition, visitors can build their dreams in the LEGO building area. During the week, three LEGO masterclasses will be held with former participant of the TV show LEGO® Masters, Frederik Ankjær Normann Pedersen.

At the Information on Level 4 and on Level 3, guests will be greeted by surreal LEGO works built by LEGO enthusiasts from Adult Fans of LEGO side by side with the new LEGO® DREAMZzz™ products.

About A Surreal Shock - Masterpieces from Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

The exhibition is a comprehensive introduction to Surrealism, its revolutionary ideas and desire to challenge the status quo and exorcise horrors of wars, and political instability in Europe in the 1920’s. The exhibition offers a rare dialogue between artists such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Leonora Carrington, Eileen Agar, Joan Miró and Man Ray and Danish surrealists such as Rita Kernn-Larsen, Sonja Ferlov Mancoba, Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen, and Wilhelm Freddie.

The exhibition is on view from 7th October 2023 – 21st January 2024 on Level 5 of the museum.
