Press release • October 2021
The Board of Directors at ARoS has appointed Rebecca Matthews, aged 53, as new director. She was selected among a group of highly qualified applicants from home and abroad.
- We’re happy to announce that Rebecca Matthews will be the new director of ARoS. We’ve been through a careful recruitment process with highly qualified candidates but, in the end, Rebecca Matthews won the day because we feel very confident that she will be able to continue the positive development the museum is currently undergoing. Rebecca has a solid background in art and culture and considerable management experience in the field of culture. We feel sure that she will be able to head ARoS, a multifaceted arts centre which, besides art, also includes research, education, and commercial activities such as a shop, a café, and a restaurant. Her competences and welcoming personality will be a local, national, and international asset; she has a formidable network and is a very experienced fundraiser. All this has weighed in Rebecca’s favour, says Carsten Fode, chairman of the board of directors, ARoS.
Rebecca Matthews has held a number of top posts in the field of art and culture. She formerly worked for the British Council as director of Global Partnerships in New York and she was director of Government Relations at the Sidney Opera House. More recently, she was director of ‘Aarhus 2017 – European Capital of Culture’ for five years and she is currently director of Glasmuseet Ebeltoft.
- I’ve accepted this unique opportunity to head one of Denmark’s most remarkable cultural flagships. ARoS is not only well-known in Denmark but also internationally and I’m looking forward to bring my experience and competences to bear in the continuous effort to develop the museum. Today, I’ve met the staff and I look forward to write the next chapters of the very successful story of this museum along with them, the board of directors, and other collaborative partners, says Rebecca Matthews, future director, ARoS.
In 2017, Rebecca Matthews was awarded the Cross of Knighthood of the Order of the Dannebrog by H.M. Queen Margrethe II for her work in the field of Danish art and culture.
