Press release • June 2023
At a press conference in the current Musikhusparken, Aarhus Municipality today unveiled what a new park surrounding ARoS and Musikhuset will look like.
At ARoS, we are eagerly anticipating the new park, which will significantly increase the sense of unity among the cultural institutions in the area. This provides new opportunities to use the outdoor areas for cultural events and recreation, says museum director at ARoS, Rebecca Matthews.
The core concept of the new park is a large oval area shaped by a chausse rock path, which extends all the way around the outdoor part of the artwork The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell, which is currently being built.
This winning design lets the artwork play a prominent role in the park, which will neatly make it land right here in the middle of Aarhus. We will have a quite unique urban space and arrival area for ARoS, which I am very much looking forward to, says Rebecca Matthews.
The new area between ARoS and Musikhuset will be revitalized thanks to a new passage through the city, as well as a grid of wild gardens, which will be known in the future as ARoS Gardens.
According to chair of the board Laura Hay Uggla, the park will serve as the new green city center of Aarhus.
The park establishes a new passage through the city and reconnects the area north and south of ARoS. It emphasises ARoS' location in the most beautiful way: On a ridge in the middle of the city, she says.
The Aarhus-based architecture studio Schønherr has designed the new park, which is funded by Realdania. The park is expected to be completed in 2025, when the ARoS extension The Next Level and the artwork The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell is also expected to be ready for inauguration.
