Press release • September 2023
Everyone is invited when Aarhus Municipality and ARoS invite you to topping-out ceremony for The Dome on Tuesday, September 26.
The Dome has risen in front of ARoS, and now is the time to thank the many talented and committed people who have contributed to the work. At the same time, we would like to invite the entire city to get a unique insight into what awaits, says Mahad Yussuf, Alderman for Culture and Citizen Services.
Yesterday, the contractor Per Aarsleff installed the last of 30 fiberglass panels that makes up the dome shape on what will be the world's largest Skypace in a museum context.
The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell is the work of one of the greatest artists of our time and is on a scale rarely seen in Denmark. Visitors can look forward to a very special art experience that dissolves time, place and ordinary laws of nature. Such work also requires a very special effort to build: Architects, engineers, technicians and craftsmen have had to think creatively and go the extra mile, and I am pleased that we can celebrate this with the topping-out ceremony, says Rebecca Matthews, Museum Director at ARoS.
The enormous fiberglass panels are 21 meters long and are created by EM Fiberglas and installed by Aarsleff. Each panel weighs 1,100 kilograms. Schmidt Hammer Lassen is the architect and turnkey advisor for the project. Aarhus Municipality is the developer.
The panels will be sprinkled with 40 centimeters of concrete and soil, and then James Turrell will complete the work with his characteristic light installations inside the dome.
At the topping-out ceremony, attendees will have the opportunity to see the work up close and get a sense of its scale and proportions.
The construction site will be open to all interested parties on Tuesday, September 26 from 3.30–6pm. The entrance will be from Frederiks Allé, right next to the Ridehuset.
The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell will be accessed through the construction site's stair tower, so please bring appropriate footwear and clothing. Participation is free and no registration is required.
