The Salling Foundations donates an additional DKK 5 million to The Next Level with the artwork The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell. With this donation, Salling Foundations has supported ARoS' expansion with a total of DKK 100 million.

ARoS is delighted to announce that The Salling Foundations is contributing an additional DKK 5 million to the financing of a mechanical lid on top of the artwork The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell. This happens on the day of the topping-out ceremony of the ARoS’ expansion.

"We receive the Salling Foundations' contribution with heartfelt gratitude. The Salling Foundations play a crucial role in enabling us to see and sense the proportions and magnificence of the work today. The experience is completed by James Turrell's characteristic lighting, and the addition of a lid helps to provide the opportunity for landmark art experiences. I dare promise you that," says Rebecca Matthews, Director of ARoS.

The lid will increase the security of the project and add new possibilities for the artistic experience. The lid will make it possible to close the dome structure at night and at other appropriate times. In addition, the lid will add the ability to create intense art experiences even when there is bright sunlight outside.

"The Next Level is a hugely impressive and visionary project. With the construction of The Dome, ARoS has taken on a huge task of creating world-class art experiences for the benefit of all visitors, and we are pleased to be able to enable this," says Karin Salling, Vice Chairman of Købmand Herman Sallings Fond.

About The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell

The Dome, a Skyspace by James Turrell is a vast work of art consisting of a circular indoor space extending to 16 metres in height and 40 metres in diameter.

The journey to The Dome starts at ARoS Level 3 and will take you down ramps under the ground. To prepare your senses for the monumental Skyspace, visitors will journey through a 100 metre long corridor, lit by James Turrell and forming an immersive prelude to entering the dome.

James Turrell’s distinctive lighting will wash the entire domed space, changing one’s perception of space and of the sky, seen through the six-metrewide central aperture.

Seating will be installed in a large circle running along the inside of the dome where visitors can spend time together. The space will also be used for live performances at different times througout the year.

James Turrell has worked with ARoS and architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen to design The Dome. Aarhus Municipality is the developer of the project.

The project is supported by the New Carlsberg Foundation, Købmand Herman Sallings Fond, Aarhus Municipality, ARoS and a private anonymous donation.
